Artist’s Statement
What I sense and feel about what I see is very important when I paint. I am a plein air painter and when I decide on a subject, I pay careful attention to the first moment of attraction. Why am I drawn to this? What is it that I love? What shapes and colors strike me? I make a quick color-crayon sketch to catch the moment. I do this before my mind clutters the image with insignificant detail, advising me what’s “right and wrong.” Then, keeping true to my gut reaction, I develop the painting. I may be initially attracted, for instance, to a line of pointed conifers atop a yellow hill under a cloud-crazed sky. These are the essential images that grab me. I hold on to these perceptions even if later I observe that the field is really not so yellow or the trees so pointed. I believe that my first, honest, heart-felt response is what I have to contribute as an artist. It is not realism, then, that I am after, but rather an expression of Nature, which reflects my inner self. Nature offers us a mirror reflection of who we are. Just as She is beautiful, abundant, expansive and vibrant, we are too. By keeping true to my initial perceptions, I strive to paint this mirror reflection.
